Design Wall Monday

I added a Row to my Design Wall this past weekend. This one will become a wall hanging. It is from Abby's Reflection in Sitka, Alaska. I had to have this one! It is SO beautiful with the batiks. I am also really glad that I got the prefused kit - there is a bunch of fiddly pieces!

What is on your design wall?

Origami Pinwheel Block

Instructions are for one block:
 9 “ Finished Block
            4 – 5” squares accent fabric
            4 – 5” squares pinwheel fabric
            12 – 5” squares background fabric

Press the background squares and the pinwheel squares in half diagonally.

For each unit, layer three background triangles and one pinwheel triangle on top of the accent square. “Weave” these triangles around, each one having one point over and one point under. Make note of which direction you “weave” the corners! Pin in place and then baste the edges.

Make four identical units.

On each unit, fold back the edge of each triangle, exposing the accent square.
Press.
I like to use a starch or starch alternative
at this point!
Lift up the edge of the fold and tack down the fold underneath. Tack down all triangles.
Sew your four units together to make pinwheel block, making sure your pinwheel corners meet in the middle. Press the seams open.
Needs ideas for using this block?
  • Make three blocks, sew them together (press seams open), add a border, and you have a table runner.
  • Add borders to your single block and sew into a pillow.
  • You could also make your single block into a hot pad.
NOTE:

This works for any size. As long as all of your beginning squares are the same size, you can make your own size of block!

It is Monday!

and I have something on my design wall :)

Some Row by Rows that were worked on a couple of weeks ago, the start of a Christmas present, the start of a class sample and some random flying geese.

My hope this week is to get some concentrated time in the Sewing Dungeon and work more on the class sample and Christmas present ... as well as work a bit more on another class sample.
I am loving this Origami Christmas Tree! Yes, the red/pink and grey are non-traditional, that just means I can leave it up through Valentines Day!

On My Design Wall Today!

I faced a dilemma this week. All of the Camper Rows that I have acquired have lovely blue and green backgrounds ... well, MOST of them do. A couple have something else altogether. Those two just don't fit in well with the rest of the rows. The one I pulled to work on this weekend had this fabric for the background:
While it is a nice fabric, it wasn't going to blend well with my other rows! So I started pulling options from my stash:
Too dull on the left, OK on the right, but it is a FQ, so I would have to seam it.
The one on the left is too light. It is a hand dye that has almost no color to it.
Oh! the one on the left is not bad, I might just use that one, but the green on the right is just not going to work (though I love the fabric!).
I found one more possibility - this hand dye is just right, not too bright, not too busy, the applique elements all show up ... So it is now ready for applique stitches!

I am participating in the Design Wall Monday Link Up at Patchwork Times, check it out!

Design Wall Monday - September 12, 2016

Life is busy, college is in full swing, the Boybarian is job hunting, Princess Sunshine is in the throes of Tech Week, and The Army Guy starts terminal leave (and job hunting).

I got a few minutes in my Sewing Dungeon over the weekend and got another camper row fused, ready for applique stitches:
That makes two, with lots more to do!

What did you work on this weekend?

Design Wall Monday August 15, 2016

I have three things on my design wall this morning :) two things from the Row by Row Experience; the Cardinal Creations Row (I chose to use the one with a snow ground), and a Beeskep together with one piece from a class I took at AQS Grand Rapids.
I took a class with Esterita Austin on a monoprinting technique ... this is a better picture than the one from my design wall. There is organza used, giving it a sheen that just doesn't photograph well when using a flash.
NOT on my design wall, something that followed me home from AQS - a new machine :) I would be playing on it today if I weren't teaching a class!

I AM A FINALIST! (yes, I am shouting!)

Remember the Lion King Challenge by Cherrywood Fabrics? The one I have been sharing since May?

Up for the Challenge
The Challenge Continues
Challenged and Plugging On
Challenged to Finish - Tree of Life

Well ... out of over 300 entries, mine is one of 120 finalists :)

That means I get to pack up my quilt and send it off to Cherrywood Fabrics where it will be professionally photographed and judged. The quilt will be published in a book dedicated to this challenge and, if chosen, will become part of a traveling exhibit for the next year (?). There are also First, Second, Third place quilts, etc.

I am rather excited :)
