Design Wall Monday September 12, 2011

Long time no blog! Life has become crazy busy here and I've just not had time to think out blog posts...yes, I do think long and hard before posting...and still edit after posting!

Today, on my design wall, is the Winding Ways quilt. I have the field totally pieced (those 3" squares did NOT defeat me!). Now I am trying to decide what to do for borders. I really don't want to bind it as is, even though the pattern showed it that way. What do you think of my fabric choices? A very thin off white batik border followed by the wine colored batik:

I like it. I agree that it needs a border, even a little one. Love the fabrics you have in the quilt.

I made one of these and didn't put a border on. But I like your choice!

My first inclination was to say it needed a teal border. But as I look at it I see the center as an opan (all those multicolors shining out) surrounded by amethysts. I don't think I would do a very large purple border cuz you don't want to darken your already bright and cheery center.

This is very interesting. How do you do?

This is beautiful! I agree that it needs a border, but I don't think I would go too big or too dark. I like the purple, but maybe a touch lighter. Good luck and be sure to keep us posted on your decision.

this is such a smashing design and a group of fabulous colors. I do like the border, although, as mentioned by others you might opt for a slightly smaller dark border so as not to overpower the light and dainty inner blocks. The white stop border will make it look like its floating. Alternately you could go with a green inner border OR if that is too much add a green flange at the outside of the purple border to add a little color ZING to it. It would pick up the greens in the body of the quilt and ad that compmlimentary dash of color. Great quilt! Can't wait to see how it finishes!

You did a great job on the curved piecing! I like the idea of a purple border but in the photo on my computer it looks a bit dark for the quilt center.

The colors in this quilt are beautiful; the quilt exquisite. I love it.

the wine colored fabric is not as dark as it is showing up on my monitor...it was brighter in my camera and photo edit...I tried teals and blues and greens and this one made me happiest :) The borders won't be huge and I am debating about putting a flange in instead of a tiny border first. I'm just letting the pieces talk to me a day or two more!

I know this is old, but is there a photo of the finished quilt with the border. I am at the same place and wondering what to do about a border. Nice work, and love the colour scheme.
